Conexões

Conexões All lovers of Brazilian samba will relish the opportunity to hear the distinctively smoky voice of Martinho da Vila on “Conexões”, his 37th album. Da Vila is one of Rio’s greatest sambistas and the prolific composer of over 400 songs.
Da Vila’s sensitive and romantic compositions have touched a universal Brazilian public as they evoke the daily realities of Rio’s Carioca dwellers. He was the first sambista to sell over a million albums with his 1995 release “Ta elicia, Ta gostoso”. But the singer has not just confined himself to the samba mode. He is equally at ease with his country’s most popular styles, sembas, frevo, ciranda, capoeira, bossa nova, toado, partido alto and many more.
Many of these expressions are found on “Conexões”. Here, da Vila brings together some of his classic successes - “Chora Carolina”, “Disritmia Exmor” and “Femmes” - with some ambitious and largely successful adaptations from French and Portuguese composers. These include “La Bohême” by Charles Aznavour who just celebrated his 80th birthday, a sumptuous version in Portuguese.
The album is has a particularly apt title, since da Vila realises a long-cherished dream, that of connecting Brazil with Africa. With the help of a Congolese friend he has translated songs from the Mother Continent, and invited female singers from Cameroon, Côte d’Ivoire and Senegal to accompany that dreamy voice of his.
